| Canstruction San Antonio San Antonio's fifth annual Canstruction® competition will be on display from August 30 through September 11 at North Star Mall during mall hours. The displays combine the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. Teams were given 8 hours to defy expectations, logic and gravity as they assembled amazing sculptures using approximately 30,000 cans of food. The public may also cast a vote for the People's Choice Award to be announced on September 12. The public is encouraged to donate canned food at the food drive within the mall at guest services in the Saks Fifth Avenue wing and at O'Krent's Abbey Flooring Center at Gold Canyon and Loop 1604. All canned goods used to create the unconventional art exhibits at North Star will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank at the close of the competition. | Project Measure Up Volunteer Corps The Health Collaborative is recruiting community volunteers for the Project Measure Up Volunteer Corps. The group assists Bexar County school districts in conducting the State-mandated FitnessGram physical fitness assessment for students in grades 3-12. Volunteers should be available at least two to five times per week and have availability during school hours. A training session is scheduled for September 14 from 9am to 2pm at the TriPoint Family YMCA, 3223 N. St. Mary's Street. | Walk For Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure With 12 million Americans, including 3 million children, suffering from food allergies, it's now more important than ever to find a cure. This year's "Walk For Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure" will take place on Sunday, October 17th at Brackenridge Park to raise funds for research and education. | 40th Annual Veterans Parade The Greater Randolph Area Veterans Council invites you to participate in the 40th Annual Veterans Parade on Saturday, November 6th in Universal City. The parade honors all veterans of all wars of the United States of America. There are spectators all along the parade route, however, the reviewing stand is in the Randolph Plaza Shopping Center parking lot (902 Pat Booker Road). The parade begins at 10:30am and lasts about 90 minutes. Please plan on arriving by 10 am, as the Universal City Police Department will close off Pat Booker Road at that time. | Children's Fall Vegetable Garden The Children's Fall Vegetable Garden will take place August 21st through December 4th from 9am to 11am at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service provides an opportunity for children 8-13 in age to learn about gardening by growing their own vegetables through the mentoring of Bexar County Master Gardener volunteers. Each child is allotted a 3.5x 28 plot at the beautiful Botanical Garden. Children have fun growing different types of seeds, herbs, vegetables, and ornamental annual flowers. Weekly educational gardening presentations are held to stimulate these young minds. The children also participate in fun, hands-on Junior Master Gardener activities. Fee: $25. | Homes For Our Troops Across America people are supporting Homes For Our Troops build specially adapted homes for our severely injured veterans. Now it's your turn to help a local hero, Army Corporal Joshua Stein, who was severely injured in an IED explosion while serving in Iraq. Corporal Stein was driving on a patrol mission when the blast tore through the vehicle, causing immediate amputations of Joshuas legs and breaking both of his arms. Homes For Our Troops is currently working on building him a home in Spring Branch, TX but they need your help. You can volunteer your time donate materials or make a cash donation to this effort.
